Ian is a Professor of Law and Director, Legal Communication and Research Program at Syracuse University College of Law. Professor Gallacher began his esteemed teaching career at the University of Baltimore in 2002. He then started teaching full-time at the Washington College of Law and moved to the University of Syracuse College of Law in 2004.
This distinguished award is presented annually to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to improve the field of Legal Writing by demonstrating:
- An ability to nurture and motivate students to excellence;
- A willingness to help other legal writing educators improve their teaching skills or their legal writing programs; and
- An ability to create and integrate new ideas for teaching and motivating legal writing educators and students.
As stated in his nomination letter, Ian exemplifies these qualities in several important ways:
Ian is a constant and selfless mentor to students and legal writing colleagues alike. He “is a revered, respected and great teacher.” He is a “brilliant strategist in developing useful, valuable teaching and learning materials,” and he has “gently and effectively encourage[d] and mentored” his faculty’s “development in terms of their teaching, scholarship, and professionalism.”
In addition to his work on Legal Communication & Rhetoric: JALWD editorial board, Ian is also a prolific scholar in his own right. He has written several books and has authored many articles in student-edited journals. He has contributed works to JALWD, Perspectives, and LWI’s Monograph Series.
His scholarship has contributed not only to building legal writing as a discipline but has also contributed to the way we teach legal writing. His nominator wrote, “Ian is forward thinking in terms of getting the word out about new technologies in legal practice and legal education, inuring to the benefit of professors and students alike.”
