About ALWD

Founded in 1996, ALWD is a non-profit professional association with more than 400 members representing more than 130 law schools throughout the United States and Canada. ALWD serves its members through:

  • Publications, including Legal Communication & Rhetoric: JALWD and the ALWD Guide to Legal Citation;
  • Events, including the Biennial Conference;
  • Resources, including Teaching and Scholarship Grants and an Annual Survey; and
  • Advocacy, including serving as the ABA’s legal writing affiliate entity and working alongside the Legal Writing Institute’s Professional Status Committee ( Summary of ALWD and LWI's Status-Related Advocacy Work).

ALWD, recognizing the need to bring all voices to the table, to be inclusive, and to be competent in cross-cultural communication, adopted a diversity strategic action plan in 2018.

Committees
ALWD’s committees are made up entirely of volunteers who partner with the ALWD Board to do the work of the organization. Committees and their chairs are appointed each year by ALWD’s President.
